SPITFIRE MJ627
MJ627 is a Supermarine Spitfire LF Mk. IX built at Castle Bromwich in 1943 entering service with 441 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force serving with the RAF. Only two days after MJ627 entered service, Pilot Officer Sid Bregman shot down a Messerschmitt Me 109 over Arnhem.
MJ627 has a maximum speed of 400 mph and a cruising speed of 200 mph, and her powerplant is a Rolls Royce Merlin 66, 27-litres, V12 cylinder engine developing 1,705 hp at 3,000 rpm.
DUNC MASON, MBE
Squadron Leader Dunc Mason, MBE, is an ex-Harrier pilot and ex-Red Arrow, having served with the BBMF as a fighter pilot for seven years from 2009.
He was the Officer Commanding from 2013 to 2015, display seasons in which there were major events with heavy BBMF participation every year.
The 2013 season included the major commemorations for the 70th anniversary of the ‘Dams Raid’. 2014 saw the 70th anniversary commemorations of D-Day and also the incredible ‘Two Lancasters’ displays with the visit of the Canadian Lancaster ‘Vera’ to the UK.
In his final season with the Flight, Dunc led the BBMF’s participation in the commemorations of the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
Dunc handed over command of the BBMF to Squadron Leader Andy ‘Milli’ Millikin in October 2015. He is now the Officer Commanding Advanced Squadron, Central Flying School Examination Wing, flying all of the RAF’s advanced training aircraft including the new Hawk T2.
